In this age of college and/or career readiness, the incredible influence of internet technology, and constant change, self-knowledge of career interests is more important than ever before!
Are you familiar with the RIASEC assessment and its accompanying “Holland Code?” What about a young person you know who is searching for a career path? Here’s a self-assessment that for anyone mature enough and self-aware enough, this simple test can provide career direction.
Dr. A.J. Drenth has written extensively about it all. Learn more by logging on to https://personalityjunkie.com/holland-code-riasec-career-interests-myers-briggs-types. Not only does he explain RIASEC, but he also ties it into the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory.
It doesn’t take anything more than completing the free assessment to understand one’s own career interests better. RIASEC can provide direction through its Holland Code. Your own answers will yield a three-letter combination of three descending areas of interest.
John Holland pioneered the field and the Strong Interest Inventory resulted. The six career paths include the Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E), and Conventional (C) domains.
It’s easy to use myself as an example. My Holland Code is ASE or ASI. The A is for Artistic. I personally think of it as creative. The opportunity to create unique, quality broadcasting, hosting, writing, speaking, teaching, etc., is my primary motivation and satisfaction. Social is a close second. If you’ve ever met me, you probably realized that immediately. I believe Enterprising arises for me from the inherently commercial nature of media. However, sales never was for me. I think I’m more of an Investigative at the tertiary level and sometimes it registers as my third component. That explains my interest in the details of personality tests, communication, etc.
“Realistic” careers include those that are very hands-on, such as carpenters, mechanics, and plumbers.
“Conventional” careers center on administrative work.
I hope this brief primer stirs interest for you in RIASEC and that you can direct young people to this wonderful self-assessment.
