Lesson #8:  Be Scared of What You Won’t Become

Your only fear should be to waste the present moment, this current school year.  If you take the easy route, you will never become what you should be.  This fact should absolutely scare you.  Why do we limit ourselves?  Why do we limit our possibilities?  We need to step out of our comfort zone so that we can become what we were created to be.  We need to give our all.  Athletes talk about “leaving it all on the field or on the court.”  We need to empty our tanks, giving all that we have, so that others can benefit from our actions.  Doug Gloyd, Muhlenberg South Middle School’s Assistant Principal, shares the quote from his college football coach, “All I want is all you got.”  What a great motto to live by!  Give everything you’ve got in everything you do.  We need to expect this from our employees, but first we must model it.  Let’s give it all!  Let’s empty our tanks!  Let’s be legendary!

Lesson #9:  Don’t Finish Where You Began

It is all about momentum and forward moving progress.  Everything we do should move us forward.  Are you the same teacher/principal/superintendent you were your first year?  Are you the same teacher/principal/superintendent you were five years ago?  Are you the same as you were last year?  We can’t stay the same, we must be constantly improving and growing as leaders.

In The Traveler’s Gift, Andy Andrews shares that, “My life – my personality, my habits, even my speech – is a combination of the books I choose to read, the people I choose to listen to, and the thoughts I choose to tolerate in my mind.”

We must move forward and seek improvement.  We must read books on leadership, work with a mentor, network with other leaders, anything to grow ourselves as leaders.  As Jon Gordon says, “We need to be better today than we were yesterday.”  We need to be better this year than we were last year.  Don’t finish where you began!  Move forward!  Be legendary!
