Hello to Each of You --

I trust your Opening Days went well and that your messages you relayed served you and your community.

If you think of the work we did in July as "Round One," it's time now to turn our attention to "Round Two," which will take place in a couple of weeks at the Teaching & Learning training.  The session with me is called "Applying Communications Leadership to Test Scores."

I know you don't have your scores yet, and there are a lot of unanswered questions, but I want to put a word in front of you -- CLARITY.  In fact, I want you to think about what it is you know, what you are clear about, what is nonnegotiable.  Why? Because your kids need you to think this way.

In preparation of our time together, I wonder if you'd take a few minutes to answer some questions -- and bring the answers with you.  The more specific and detailed you can be, the more help I can give you.
  1. If you had ONE main message -- comprised of up to 10 words to teach your community how to think about the education of its children, what would the up to 10 words be?  (FYI -- These could be the same as your opening day message.)
  2. What is the one emotion/feeling your community needs? How about your teachers/staff? (may or may not be the same)
  3. What do test scores have to do with that main message?
  4. What other measures of student achievement/success does your district have?
  5. What programs, etc. do you have in place to drive student success?  What results are you seeing?  BRAG.  BE SPECIFIC?
  6. Any programs "in the wings?"
  7. Are there any "elephants in the living room" that you need to fold in when communicating with your community/teachers?
  8. What is your personal commitment to student success? Can you point to anything specific that you have done/will do to drive this success?
  9. What about teachers? BRAG.
  10. Administration/Staff?
  11. Parents?
  12. Board?
  13. Students?
  14. Overall community/local businesses
  15. What sets your district apart?  BRAG.
  16. Anything else that you are clear about?

I am looking forward to seeing you in Louisville.  See you soon!

Brenda this blog helped us set in place the other items I shared in another response. We have to sell our district and vision to our communities. This also sets up talking points with admins in our district as we prepare for our CDIP, CSIP and look to improve our test results and student success.
