Frankfort, KY – Dr. Henry Webb, superintendent of Floyd County Schools, has earned the title of 2017 Kentucky Superintendent of the Year by the Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA). Dr. Webb received the award today in a surprise ceremony in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, from KASA Executive Director Wayne Young. It was attended by the district’s faculty, staff, board members and community leaders. In addition to the recognition, he received a bronze eagle sculpture, a $2,500 scholarship for a Floyd Co. high school senior, a SOY ring, and travel reimbursement to the AASA National Conference on Education. Dr. Webb is now a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year Award, given by the American Association of School Administrators in March 2017.

“The success that has come to the Floyd County Schools under Dr. Webb’s leadership is nothing short of remarkable. He has established a culture of excellence that has produced not only phenomenal academic achievement, but also an embedded vision for future success,” said KASA Executive Director Wayne Young.

Floyd County Schools has enjoyed academic success under Dr. Webb’s leadership. After taking the district’s top job in 2007, he has guided a turn-around that has been admired by his peers across the commonwealth. Once classified as a needs assistance district, Floyd County Schools has been classified as District of Distinction two of the last three years in the Kentucky Department of Education’s Unbridled Learning Accountability model.

Dr. Webb and his team are also proud of the district’s improved efforts in communication. Board meetings rotate between the various schools in the geographically large county. Frequent calls, text messages, social media posts, personalized letters and district-wide newsletters also keep stakeholders engaged with the district. The students, parents, faculty and staff of Floyd County Schools also see their superintendent often in schools and at community functions.

During Dr. Webb’s tenure, Floyd County Schools has reduced expenditures for electricity an average of $458,000 per year. Dr. Webb and his Board also have supervised a facilities improvement plan. At the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, all students will enter better facilities.

“This recognition is about more than a superintendent leading a district to success. It’s about how a product of our county and our school system changed what we believed we could accomplish and how others in Kentucky perceive us. It’s about demonstrating how things don’t have to stay the way they are and that it’s possible to go from thinking about “if we can” to “how we will,” said nominator Pam Caudill, Floyd County Schools director of community education.

Dr. Webb attended Alice Lloyd College and earned his Bachelor of Arts from Morehead State University in 1994. He received a Master of Education degree from the University of Louisville in 1997 and Master of Arts degree from Morehead State in 2004. He earned his Doctorate of Education degree from Morehead State in 2013.
He became principal at South Floyd High School in 1999. He served as director of instruction from 2004 to 2007 when he was hired to be the Floyd County Schools superintendent.
