Reviewing Student Growth Goals: Ensuring quality and impacting student achievement

By Jennifer Fraley posted 05-14-2015 15:35

In October, teachers are finalizing their Student Growth Goals (SGG) and are submitting those goals to their principal for review and feedback. The review process can be a daunting one for a principal. Large staff, varying content areas, and short timelines can make this a stressful task.

There are some helpful hints and resources that principals can use to be sure they are providing descriptive feedback to teachers that will not only improve the Student Growth Goal, but will impact student achievement in terms of meeting meaningful goals.  As principals review Student Growth Goals, they will want to focus on common, critical areas.

1. The principal will want to ensure that the Student Growth Goal is written around an “enduring skill.” An enduring skill is a skill that:

• ENDURES beyond a single test date • is of value in other disciplines

• is relevant beyond the classroom • is worthy of embedded, course-long focus

• may be necessary for the next level of instruction

The Kentucky Department of Education has resources to provide guidance for enduring skills along with some sample enduring skills. (See URL to right.)

 2. The principal will review the goal for a clearly stated “growth component” and “proficiency component.” Resources on KDE’s webpage, specifically the Think and Plan Tool, provide guiding questions to develop the SGG. (See URL to right.)

 3. The principal will want to ensure the selected assessment is congruent and allows for rigor and comparability. The resources defined in Step 2 of SGG development on KDE’s webpage help clarify assessment. (See URL to right.)

You can also find a comprehensive resource provided by KDE that shows principals and teachers how to review and improve SGGs. (See URL below.)
